Treatment of cancer
Commonest cancer in male chinese patients are: lung cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, colo-rectal cancer, esophageal cancer, cancer of the bladder, pancreatic cancer, haematological cancer (cancer of blood cells) , lymphoma and cancer of the brain.
In female patients, apart from the above, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and cancer of the uterus. Of these, cancer of the lungs have the highest mortality rate.
The mainstay for treatment of cancers are Surgery, Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy (RT or radiotherapy). Newer treatments include targeted therapy, immune therapy and hormonal therapy.
Cancer diagnosed early are a prime candidate for surgical removal and it remains the best treatment / main treatment option for the patient, raising the cure rate significantly. Our surgeon will assess the patient status as well as the tumour status for the possibility of surgical removal.
Nowadays, advances in surgical techniques mean that a lot of surgery can be done via a few small holes on the body (laparoscopic surgery/ robotic surgery). They are called minimally invasive surgery. They help to reduce the trauma to the patient, the blood loss and the complication rate. The patient would not have to stay in the hospital as long as in the past.
After surgery, a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy will help patients in their overall survival and quality of life.
Radiation Therapy (RT)
RT can be given externally via a linear accelerator or internally with radioactive substances. The radiation will damage tumour cell DNA, stunting its growth. Each treatment of RT will take 5-30 minutes, just like taking an X-ray, pain-free.
RT is the mainstay for treatment of NPC, Prostate cancer and cervical cancer and can be part of adjuvant therapy.
They are anti-cancer drugs that kill tumour cells, based on its fast growth rate. There are many misunderstandings concerning chemotherapy.
In fact, chemotherapies make a lot of progress over the years with fewer and fewer side effects and new treatment for these side effects are very effective. It’s important to communicate with your oncologists on your concerns.
They block the growth and spread of cancer by interfering with the specific target that is involved in the growth, progression, and spread of cancer.
They are a milestone in precision medicine and cancer treatment with more specificity and precision to kill cancer cells only.
It is a type of treatment that helps your immune system fight cancer. One reason that cancer cells thrive is because they are able to hide from your immune system. These drugs can mark cancer cells so it is easier for the immune system to find and destroy them.
FDA and EU have approved immunotherapy in the treatment of melanoma, lung cancer and renal cancer.
Certain cancers’ growth is dependent on hormones, thus depleting our body of certain hormones can be used to treat these cancers, for instance in breast cancer and prostate cancer.
