Colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Hong Kong, there is around 5,000 new cases each year. Due to the lack of symptoms in early stage, many patients have already reach the III or IV stage by the time it was discovered, and the survival rate of the late stage colorectal cancer is below 10% within five years. Colonoscopy is a regular procedure for detection. As the symptoms are not easy to discover, it is important to undergo regular checking in order to detect and follow up the illness as soon as possible, especially for those who have related family medical history. By Colonoscopy, the doctor could identify polyps or abnormal growths in the colon and remove small amounts of tissue for analysis (called a biopsy). Early detection and polyp removal could reduce the chance of getting colorectal cancer for 3-8 times.

Gastroscopy

Many people have stomach pains due to work stress and irregular eating patterns. Also, the symptoms of early stage of gastric cancer are not obvious, so it is easy to take it lightly until the cancer has spread to other organs, increasing the difficulty of treatment. In addition, people who have had Helicobacter pylori may have 4-6 times higher chance to develop stomach cancer than normal people. Therefore, Gastroscopy check-up act as an important role in early detection and treatment of gastric cancer. During the Gastroscopy, doctor will use a gastroscope, flexible and has a diameter less than that of a little finger, to examine your oesophagus, stomach and the first part of your small bowel called the duodenum. Also, the doctor may need to take some tissue samples (biopsies) from the lining of your upper digestive tract for analysis. The samples will be retained for examination under microscopy. It can help to examine for disease of the stomach such as ulcers, bleeding, tumors and Helicobacter pylori infections.
