New Trends in Axillary Surgery for Breast Cancer: Preserving Lymph Nodes, Reducing Lymphedema

Dr. Ying Wai Leung, explains that when cancer cells spread from the breast to the axilla, in most cases they first invade the sentinel lymph node. During surgery, the doctor will inject a tracer for localisation, so as to specifically extract a few possible sentinel lymph nodes for pathological examination. If the test results show no cancer cell metastasis in the sentinel lymph nodes, the chance of the remaining axillary lymph nodes being affected is relatively low, and patients may therefore consider omitting axillary lymph node dissection.
